Could it be the starter solenoid only?
Sometimes — on older vehicles it's a separate part. On most modern cars the solenoid is integrated and the whole assembly gets replaced together.
Why does tapping the starter make it work?
Brushes inside the starter are worn down — tapping briefly restores contact. It's a sign the starter is on its last legs. Plan replacement before it strands you.
